Competition: WIN a £50 Etsy voucher with PlastiKote spray paint

Here’s your chance to win a £50 Etsy voucher courtesy of PlastiKote spray paint.

If you’ve never used spray paint and are a bit apprehensive, our advice is to buy one can and try it out on a couple of small projects before tackling something bigger. There are probably a few bits lying around the house or in the attic that you’ve fallen out of love with or are looking a bit tired. One can of PlastiKote Twist & Spray – a great all rounder that works on most surfaces and is easy to use – will do several smaller items. Visit our YouTube channel for how to videos and top tips on using spray paint.

The vase, frame and lamp stand in this picture have been sprayed in Twist & Spray’s Dusty Coral. It took just one can and a few minutes to do each one plus drying time. It’s so quick and easy.

Top tips: prepping garden furniture for PlastiKote spray paint

After sitting out over the winter, garden furniture can look tired and in need of some TLC to give it a new lease of life ready for the summer.

1 - garden furniture before

Here are some top tips for prepping your garden furniture ready for a PlastiKote spray paint makeover:

2 - use wire brush to remove flakes of rust and old paint

  1. Whether your furniture is metal, wooden or wicker, make sure it’s free of any flakes of old paint and, in the the case of metal furniture, rust. Use wire wool or a wire brush to get rid of any stubborn flakes.

3- clean with a damp cloth

2. Lightly sand the surface to get a good key, then wash with warm, soapy water to remove any dust or dirt. Allow to dry.

3. Set up your spray area with plenty of dust sheets or newspaper. It is preferable to spray paint outdoors on a warm, still day.

4 - Priming with PlastiKote Metal Primer

4. For added durability and greater adhesion, use a suitable PlastiKote Primer.

5 - spraying chair with PlastiKote Garden in Surf Green copy

5. When the Primer is thoroughly dry, use the PlastiKote spray paint of choice and colour, following instructions on the can.

6. Our recommended choice of spray paint for garden furniture (wicker, metal or wood) is a PlastiKote Primer, followed by PlastiKote Garden spray paint.

Reader project: make a Gin Bar with PlastiKote spray paint

The spraypaintideas team love to see how you use PlastiKote spray paint to transform bits and pieces around the house, from simple frame makeovers to handmade, customised furniture – and everything in between.

This gin bar from Rosie on Instagram – _@rosieanne – recently caught our eye, putting two of our favourite things in one project – PlastiKote spray paint and gin!  It’s a stylish and useful upcycle of a storage trolley from Hobbycraft.

reader project - before

Rosie says: “I absolutely LOVE my gin and wanted somewhere to display everything and create a little gin corner without having to splash out on an expensive bar!

reader project - being sprayed

So I decided to create one myself and was surprised at how easy it was to use spray paint. I primed everything first and then used Rose Gold/Copper spray paint on the frame and Night Navy for the drawers.

reader project final

This was my first project using the paint and I can’t recommend it enough. Easy to apply, quick to dry and the finish is fab! Super impressed with the turn out and now I have somewhere pretty to store my gins! (Any excuse to buy more pretty bottles!)”

We really enjoy seeing the diverse mix of ideas and creations using PlastiKote spray paints. If you have a spray paint project you’d like to share with us, email info@spraypaintideas.co.uk. If we feature it on our blog, you’ll get some ‘thank you’ spray paints.

How to: PlastiKote spray paint – New Year, New Colours

Introducing the latest addition to the PlastiKote spray paint family – Matt Classic Teal, Dusty Coral, Duck Egg Blue, French Grey and Satin Lime Green in the Twist & Spray Colour range. They work beautifully together or can be used individually to update items around the home – spray frames, vases, lamp stands, chairs, almost anything! Available in 400ml cans, it’s an affordable way to add a splash of colour or keep up with the trend.

Jan how to - in body

If you’re a spray paint novice, PlastiKote Twist & Spray Colour paint is a great product to start you on your spraying journey. It’s easy to use, quick to dry and can be applied to almost any surface. And no annoying brush strokes!

Here’s a super simple project that anyone can do.

You will need:

Belly baskets

Dust sheets/newspaper

PlastiKote Twist & Spray Colour (we used Classic Teal, Dusty Coral and Lime Green)

Jan how to - in body1

As we wanted to spray only the bottom half of our belly baskets, this set of three (from Amazon) were perfect as they came folded as in the picture above allowing them to be sprayed without having to mask any area. If you purchase some that aren’t folded, use masking tape and newspaper to mask off the area you don’t want sprayed.

Jan how to - in body2

Apply the Twist & Spray Colour of your choice following instructions on the can. Make sure the basket is dry and clean before starting and use long, even strokes to build up the colour. It is recommended to build the layers rather than try to get an even coverage in one go. A project like this should only need two coats, allowing 15-30 minutes between each coat. The basket will be touch dry in under an hour.

Jan how to - in body3

Allow to thoroughly dry before putting into use.

Hopefully, we’ve inspired you to have a go. Share your ideas with us on Facebook or Instagram #plastikoteuk – we’d love to see them.

Reader project: Metallic changes with PlastiKote spray paint

After the Christmas decorations have been put back in the attic, your house can feel a bit drab and uninspiring. An easy way to inject some colour or introduce a new accent into a colour scheme is to use PlastiKote spray paint.

Instagrammer Kaval, @1st_home_journey, has done just that, not because the house was drab – far from it – but because nothing was the right colour! Kaval explains:

“I recently purchased a property with my partner and needed to furnish the whole house. I kept finding furniture that was perfect but in the wrong colour! This happened repeatedly and I missed out on so many amazing pieces for the house because of it.

rp3

Whilst I was walking through The Range one day in search of wallpaper, I discovered PlastiKote! It was the copper coloured spray paint that initially caught my eye as I had been wanting a copper clock for a while.

rp4

Once I’d sprayed the clock from silver to copper so easily, I went on a bit of a spray painting frenzy and have ended up with four mirrors, two side tables and a clock that have all been sprayed from their original colour using PlastiKote!

rp1

Such a fantastic way to find amazing things for around the house when you know you can change the colour of them for less than a tenner!”

rp2

We’re delighted that Kaval has found PlastiKote spray paint and is a convert to the ease and affordability of recycling items around the home.

We really enjoy seeing the diverse mix of ideas and creations using PlastiKote spray paints. If you have a spray paint project you’d like to share with us, email info@spraypaintideas.co.uk. If we feature it on our blog, you’ll get some ‘thank you’ spray paints.
