With the warmer days of Spring comes the planting up of our veggie plot. We use these cute tin can bugs to keep the birds at bay and give our seedlings a chance to flourish. Bee, dragonfly or ladybird? Tell us which is your favourite and you could win a £50 Hobbycraft gift card. The winner will be chosen at random from all entries.

Instagrammer project: experimenting with PlastiKote spray paint

We love finding different uses for PlastiKote spray paint but have never come across a different way of applying it. It’s a spray paint, right? Well, not always. Instagrammer Cara made these fabulous coaster from concrete and spray paint to decorate them – but not by spraying them!

To get the splash effect, she sprayed a small amount of spray paint on to her gloved hand (a disposable plastic glove) and flicked the paint over the coaster. it’s created this random pattern and we love it!

A fan of spray paint, Cara has used it in several of her tutorials. These glass jar tealight holders particularly caught our eye – so pretty.

Featured padlocks

Top tip: find the key easily with PlastiKote spray paint

This top tip was passed on to us by a company that uses various padlocks in one area, all the same make, but with different keys. They tried using different fobs but inevitably not everyone could remember which one was which and would have to try each key until they found the right one.

Their ingenious solution was to use leftover PlastiKote spray paint in different colours to spray each lock and key to make it super easy to match them.

These are the first two they did, spraying the key whilst in the lock to make it a really quick fix! The keys can be kept on the same keyring as there’s no mistaking which key goes with which lock – genius!

This idea could be used for any set of keys. Spray the top of a key to match a front door, garage door, filing cabinet, store cupboard, etc. Even if the locks are different, it makes it easy to see which one you need. It could be particularly helpful for an elderly person who may forget which key is used for what – colour code their key to match the colour of the door.

Chalkboards are useful additions in the home, none more so than in the kitchen. We’ve made several over the years but this is a cute chopping board makeover using a chopping board from The Range and Chalkboard from PlastiKote spray paint that you can hang up or sit on the kitchen counter to jot down reminders for your shopping list or appointments.

You will need:

Chopping Board (ours is from The Range)

Dust sheets/newspaper

Masking tape

PlastiKote Chalkboard spray paint

PlastiKote Twist & Spray Primer

How to:

 

  • Make sure the board is clean and dry.
  • Spread newspaper/dust sheets out in a well-ventilated working area or preferably outside
  • We recommend priming bare wood because of its porous nature. Following instructions on the can, prime the board with PlastiKote Twist & Spray Primer.

 

how to step by step

 

  • When thoroughly dry, apply a couple of layers of PlastiKote Chalkboard spray paint. You can re-coat at anytime.
  • Allow to dry. The board will be touch dry in 2-3 hours but allow 7 days before using chalk on it.

Top tip: using PlastiKote spray paint on a wet and windy day

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is how do I spray paint when it is raining or windy?

The answer is simple – we use a garage or shed and a cardboard box as a spray booth. A spray booth is easy to make, extremely effective and usually free! Get a big box – the bigger the better.  Set it up in your garage or shed, preferably on an old table already covered with newspaper or cardboard.

Another top tip is to use a smaller box inside your booth to act as a plinth to stand your item to be sprayed on. This can easily be moved to enable access all round your sprayed item without having to touch it. Place the object you want to spray on the plinth and spray.

The overspray stays on the inside of the box.  A spray paint booth is ideal for using PlastiKote spray paint on small projects.

Instagrammer project: be bold with PlastiKote spray paint colours

We tend to stick to using colours that we know and that are ‘safe’. However, that might all be changing since we found @patirobins on Instagram! Pati’s bold use of colour against dark backdrops has inspired us to experiment. Here’s what Pati has to say about her style:

“I am a Polish maximalist and serial eBayer, living in UK for past 12 years. I love colours and changing things around but sadly budget does not always match to what I want to achieve.

Over the years I have managed to source some beautiful secondhand  accessories and furniture from places like ebay , gumtree , charity shops, freebie sites and from family and friends. I always look beyond the colour of the item I find as this can easily be changed with PlastiKote spray paint.  I have always used this brand, I swear by it . It is also a great way to renew your existing pieces without spending much as well saving them from going into landfill. You can spray just about anything. My mirror in the hallway over the years has been painted all the colours of the rainbow – it breathed a new lease of life into something I had fallen out of love with.

Colour can transform any space  – and if you want to add pops of colour, you can spray anything from lampshades ( providing you use led light bulbs that don’t get hot) to candlestick holders. Pop a few coloured pieces here and there and watch the space come alive. When you get bored, grab another can of PlastiKote and get spraying!

If you want a fuss-free furniture upcycle project, you can use a standard PlastiKote spray or one of their new Chalk range – which gives that perfect chalky finish in a flash! The same goes to your appliances –  rather than trying to achieve a professional streak-free finish with a brush (that you know is impossible), you could use a special  appliance  spray paint   I have used it in the past and loved the result.”

How to: Easter treat jars with PlastiKote spray paints

Easter treat jars

What is nicer than a homemade gift, whether it’s for a Easter, a birthday or just to say you care? These cute little jars made with PlastiKote spray paint could be adapted for any occasion.

You will need:

Glass jar

Small pine drawer knob

Masking tape

PlastiKote Fast Dry Enamel spray paint

Decorative washi tape

How to:

  • Clean the glass jar and lid with soapy water and allow to thoroughly dry.
  • Using a hot glue gun, stick the pine knob to the lid of the jar. Leave to dry.
  • Mask the jar so that you have a strip around the middle to spray.
  • Following instructions on the can, spray the jar and the lid. Two fine layers are better than one thick one.

  • Allow to thoroughly dry. The paint will be touch dry in under an hour and thoroughly dry in 2-3 hours.
  • Apply a strip of decorative washi tape to add interest to the jar.
  • Fill with sweet treats for a pretty, personal gift at Easter or anytime.
