Reader projects: festive fruit displays with PlastiKote spray paint

We love it when readers send us pictures of their Christmas transformations and these ones have got us rushing to the supermarket and out into the garden.  A big thank you to Beckie Batchelor from The Making Bee for pictures of her fabulous pineapple centrepiece and festive leaf garlands using PlastiKote spray paint. She is going to have one spectacular Christmas!

The pineapple on its own is a glorious example of what a single can of Gold Leaf spray paint can achieve. But we love Beckie’s combination of natural bay leaves and the pineapple sprayed in Gold Leaf   to form a centrepiece that will grace her table on Christmas Day.

Beckie’s leaf garlands are also a triumph. Sprayed in gold leaf and copper they are chic, stylish and bang on trend.

How to: frosted lace tealight holders with PlastiKote spray paint

These frosted lace tealight holders are just perfect for Christmas. They will look fabulous as part of your table decoration and can add elegance to any corner of a room. This is our favourite sort of project: a simple makeover using PlastiKote spray paint that elevates the humble glass jar to a whole new level  – just in time for the festive season. Perfect!

You will need

Old glass jars

Length of lace

Double sided tape

PlastiKote Glass Frosting

Tealights

How to

  • Prepare your area for spraying with dustsheets or newspaper – either in a well-ventilated room or outside.
  • Make sure the jars are clean and dry. Cut a length of lace to go round the jar and fix using the double-sided tape, making sure the lace is tight to the jar.

votive-s-by-s-1-and-2

  • Apply two or three fine layers of PlastiKote Glass Frosting following instructions on the can. Don’t be tempted to get total coverage in one go – build the layers until you’re happy with the look.
  • Once the Frosting is completely dry, carefully remove the lace.

  • Pop in a tealight and make it part of your table decorations this Christmas.

Top tips: Homemade Christmas decorations with PlastiKote spray paint

Nothing is more satisfying than making your own decorations and displaying them round your home. And we love nothing more than finding new ways to express our creativity with PlastiKote spray paint. So our tip this month is a Christmas one.  Take one can of 100ml can of Fast Dry Enamel spray paint (around £3.99), find bits and pieces found around the home and garden and make your own sparkling decorations that won’t cost a fortune.

For the less experienced crafter, spray paint dried leaves, ivy, fruit or frames and decorate your table, walls and Christmas trees. Use colour or metallic, whichever suits your theme.

Mini makes: using up leftover PlastiKote spray paint

What do you do with your leftover PlastiKote spray paint?

It’s not unusual to have a few cans with some paint left in them and it’s a shame to waste it. Why not get creative and do a mini makeover? Frames, candlesticks, an old wine bottle, tin cans – the list is endless. You could even recycle something you have to make the perfect present for a loved one.

Here are a few ideas: colourful lids for your homemade chutney, bookends made from rocks or personalised paperweights from stones, gift boxes for a special present, old tins transformed into stylish kitchen canisters or slightly crushed cans into unusual vases!

Reader project: recycle a chair with PlastiKote spray paint

Thank you to Sarah Horsburgh for sending in this fabulous picture of a chair that she recently recycled using fabric from Laura Ashley and PlastiKote spray paint. This is Sarah’s first spray paint project and we’re sure you will agree she is a natural. We’re also pretty keen on her dog, Missy Elliott, who photo-bombed the final picture!

Sarah said to us: “I got the chair from a local auction house in Derby which was about to throw it away.  I have always loved the shape of it.  It has spent many years in my possession used as a chair to stand on when I am decorating.  I have recently moved house and thought I would give the chair a new lease of life.

I am assistant manager at Hobbycraft in Stafford so I have no excuse not to be crafty! This is the first time that I have spray painted anything and I have well and truly got the bug and am starting my next project soon.”
