How to: make chalkboard herb pots with PlastiKote spray paint

Don’t let those plastic pots go to waste! Why not recycle them with PlastiKote spray paint and turn them into chalkboard herb pots. They make great presents – especially for Mother’s Day. It’s on Sunday 26th March for anyone who hasn’t already got it marked in their diary. Head over to Pinterest here to check out our other Mother’s Day gift ideas.

You will need:

Plastic soup pot or similar

Dust sheets/newspaper or a garden cane

PlastiKote Chalkboard spray paint

Herb of your choice from the supermarket

How to:

  • Wash out the pot with soapy, hot water and allow to completely dry.
  • Spread newspaper/dust sheets out in a well-ventilated working area or preferably outside OR place the pot over a garden cane stuck in the ground.
  • Following instructions on the can, apply a couple of layers of PlastiKote Chalkboard spray paint to the pot. You can re-coat at anytime.

  • Allow to dry. The pot will be touch dry in 2-3 hours but allow 7 days before using chalk on it.
  • Plant up with your favourite herb.

TOP TIP! Spray painting cans, bottles or plastic pots using a garden cane as a support makes it so much easier to spray all areas.

Why not spray 3 or 4 pots and make a little herb garden? These terracotta pots have had the same treatment, though we would recommend using PlastiKote Twist & Spray Primer in Black first as terracotta is very porous.

wrought iron table after T&S Warm Grey

Reader project: outdoor table makeover with PlastiKote spray paint

Thanks to Pippa who has emailed us with her superb transformation of an old wrought iron table using PlastiKote spray paint.

Pippa said: “I was about to take this old table to the local tip when I came across spraypaintideas and decided to have a go at spray painting! Never having used spray paint before I watched a few vlogs which gave me a bit of confidence. I gave the table a good clean with a wire brush, washed it down and then used a PlastiKote Primer before using Warm Grey.  And I’m so happy with the result.  I love the colour and it’s given the table a whole new lease of life. I can’t wait to do my next project.”
