How to: make a kitchen chalkboard with PlastiKote spray paint

Add a stylish chalkboard to your kitchen using PlastiKote spray paint.

You will need:

MDF cut to size

Dust sheets/newspaper

PlastiKote Twist & Spray Primer in Black

PlastiKote Chalkboard

Rope

How to:

  • Measure the wall area you want to cover in the kitchen, and ask your DIY store to cut a piece of three quarter inch thick MDF to size. Sand the edges smooth.
  • Drill two holes, slightly larger than the width of your rope, in the top corners of the board.

How to step 1 and 2

how to step 3 and 4

  • Apply a single coat of Twist & Spray Black Primer, followed by several thin coats of Chalkboard until you have total coverage.
  • When the paint is dry, thread your rope through the holes, forming a loop at the back. Tie in large knots at the front to secure.
  • Always follow instructions on the can.

Top tip:  For best results, allow the Chalkboard to thoroughly dry for 7 days before using chalk on it.

You could also try putting the chalkboard into a frame and spraying the frame to match your kitchen decor. Or how about taking some old plant pots or yoghurt pots and turning them into stylish herb containers?

Reader project: clever kitchen storage with PlastiKote spray paint

Beckie Batchelor who owns The Making Bee is one of those truly creative people who can turn her hand to anything, whether it’s running children’s art and crafts workshops, upholstering chairs or making some beautiful Christmas decorations for the local hospice fayre. It’s almost unfair that one person should have all that talent! We’ve chosen to feature one of her practical but stylish kitchen makeovers using PlastiKote spray paint as recycling is part of our theme this month. But do scroll down the page for some of the other fabulous things she has created for her home.

Beckie turned an old cupboard into clever storage by making shelves out of old brown formica worktops and spray painting them.  She also used spray paint on the pine louvred doors. The finishing touch was a set of battery operated lights from IKEA that come on when you open the doors…

     From this…                                                   to this!

We’ve sent some cans of spray paint to Beckie to say thank you for submitting her kitchen cupboard project. And here are some more of her projects. If you want to see more of Beckie’s work or get in touch with her then click here
